The calculations involved in determining the average counts in the tex system are much simpler than those of the indirect systems. This is, because it is a direct system and it’s length and weight units are in the metric system.
To calculate the average count in the tex system, when the yarns of different counts are of equal length, take a suitable length unit in kilometer. Then determine separately the weight in grams of this length unit of yarn of each count by simply multiplying the length unit of the yarn by it’s count number. Now, the total length of the yarns and their weight being known, calculate the average count by using the formula,

Average count in tex,

Total weight in grams
= ………………………………………..
Total length in kilometers

If the lengths of the yarns of different counts are not same, and the length of the yarn of each count is given, then calculate the weight in grams of the yarn of each count separately by multiplying the length by it’s corresponding weight. Then add the length of all the yarns together. Similarly add the weight of all the yarns together. From the total length in kilometers and the total weight in grams, so obtained, calculate the formula given above.

Where the corresponding weight of yarn of each count is given, then proceed in the following manner:

Calculate separately the length of the yarn of each count in kilometers by simply dividing the given weight in grams by it’s count number. Then add the length of all the yarns together. Also add the weight of all the yarns together. From the total length in kilometers and the total weight in grams, so obtained, calculate the average count by applying the formula given above.

The methods of calculations shown above would apply where the counts of the yarns are expressed in any direct system, except that the appropriate length and weight units of the direct system in question have to be used in place of kilometers and grammes respectively.

Example 01:
Calculate the average count of 10 tex, 15 tex, and 20 tex yarns. The length of yarn in each case is same.

Solution:

The weight of yarn = length in kilometers × Count in tex in grams.

Take the length of each count of yarn as 1 kilometer

Then,

1 kilometer of 10 tex yarn weights 1 × 10 = 10 grams ……………..(1)
1 kilometer of 15 tex yarn weights 1 × 15 = 15 grams ……………..(2)
1 kilometer of 20 tex yarn weights 1 × 20 = 20 grams ……………..(3)

So, adding (1), (2) and (3)

We have,
Total length 3 kilometers and total weight 45 grams.

Therefore,

Average count in tex,

Total weight in grams
= ………………………………………..
Total length in kilometers

45
= ………
3

= 15 tex.

So, Average count is 15 tex.

Example 02:

A warp contains yarns of the following particulars:
• 4 ends of 30 tex yarn
• 16 ends of 40 tex yarn
Now, calculate the average count.

Solution:

Now, the yarns of 30 tex and 40 tex are in the proportion of 4: 16

Then,

4 kilometers of 30 tex yarn weight 4 × 30 = 120 grams ………..(1)
16 kilometers of 40 tex yarn weight 16 × 40 = 640 grams …….(2)

Now, adding (1) and (2)

We have, total length 20 kilometers and total weight 760 grams.

Therefore,

Average count in tex,

Total weight in grams
= ………………………………………..
Total length in kilometers

760
= ………….
20

= 38 tex.

So, Average count is 38 tex.

Example 03:
Calculate the average count of 240 grammes of 16 tex, 625 grammes of 25 tex, and 720 grammes of 36 tex yarns.

Solution:

The length of 240 grammes of 16 tex yarn,

240
= ………..
16

= 15 kilometers ………………(1)

Again,

The length of 625 grammes of 25 tex yarn,

625
= ……………
25

= 25 kilometers ……………(2)

And,

The length of 720 grammes of 36 tex yarn,

720
= …………..
36

= 20 kilometers ………………(3)

Now, adding (1), (2) and (3)

We have, total weight 1585 grammes and total length 60 kilometers.

Therefore,

Average count in tex,

Total weight in grammes
= ………………………………………..
Total length in kilometers

1585
= …………….
60

= 26.4 tex

So, Average count is 26.4 tex.
